Motor sport is the pinnacle of our passion with cars and bikes. John Bradshaw started racing Lotus Elans and modified sports cars against drivers like Steve Soper and Jonathan Palmer.
John modified, designed and built the cars in his garage with his friend John Raffo. The cars progressed through Modsports to special GT with a Cosworth BDG engine Lotus Europa culminating in building a single seat monoposto car which he won the National Championship with in 1987. Road and Race Restorations Ltd were formed in 1988 to answer requests from fellow competition to prepare and set up their cars.
Developing the business into restoring classics curtailed his racing activities until 2003 when he bought a 1976 Argo 3ml formula 3 car racing with his historic car club and classic formula 3.
In 2006 John’s son Tom (who now works for the business) started racing. It quickly became apparent that even after only 1 season of karting at the age of 15 Tom possessed a talent and his first season of racing at 16 he won the competitive Pre 90 Formula Ford Championship setting new lap records and winning the Championship with 10 wins from 13 starts.
Two years in Formula Palmer Audi culminated in more lap records, more wins and fastest laps than any other competitor, however problems at Spa left him with too much to do and he finished 2nd in the Championship.
In 2009 he was awarded the Porsche Scholarship for the prestigious and incredibly competitive Porsche Carrera Cup. Budget constraints even with Porsche’s help, meant the steep learning curve of driving a powerful rear engine Porsche and getting the best out of the tyres available was a struggle, but still netted podium finishes, fastest lap and driver of the weekend accolades.
Budget constraints have hampered Tom’s Championship aspirations the last couple of years, but he has kept his hand in driving customer’s cars in the Lotus Trophy and VdeV cars helping development with Juno Race Cars based locally in the North West.
This year however, Road and Race have teamed up with local Porsche specialists Hartech.
Barry Hart has built a strong team in 2012 racing a pair of Boxsters in the Porsche Club Championship. The link-up between the two local companies has brought together Hartech considerable engine transmission skills with Tom’s and Road and Race experience to achieve a brilliant start which has seen Tom battling at the top of the championship.
